A stunning Victorian Era Serving Dish with base compartment for keeping hot water in to keep the food warm. It is Silver Plated....with the base metal probably brass considering the weight of the piece.....some scratches and cuts on inside but otherwise immaculate for age,,,,, dates to late 1800's . Lovely engraving around the lid and very solid ornate handles and feet. Measures 14" in length including handles and 9 1/2" in width at centre, with a height to handle top of 6". As was usual with these warmer dishes the handle twists off for cleaning. The marks to base are A & S which we believe is for T. ASHTON & SON of Birmingham.......they were Jewellers & Silversmiths going back to around 1859.
