An original old WOERMANN SHIPPING LINE Advertising Poster produced by the German firm of Justus Perthes. The poster is 21 3/4" x 16 1/2"....it is complete but a bit crinkled and tatty with some loss of print/picture at bottom area....we have taped some edges on the back to strength them. We think it dates to 1916 or around that time as the Poster has the Deutsche Ost-Afrika Line on it also and they purchased Woermann Line 1n 1916. The Woermann-Linie was a German shipping company that operated from 1885 to 1941. It was founded on 15 June 1885 by Adolph Woermann and developed as one of the leading shipping companies to Africa. From 1899 it was based in Afrikahaus in Hamburg. The Woermann family sold it to Deutsche Ost-Afrika Linie in 1916. For decades it transported contract laborers to various places on the African continent, for instance, workers from Liberia and Nigeria to Spanish Guinea. In 1941–42 it was taken over by John T. Essberger.
Johann Georg Justus Perthes (September 11, 1749, Rudolstadt, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt – May 2, 1816, Gotha, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg) was a German publisher and founder of the publishing house that bears his name.
