A Rare souvenir miniature lifebuoy 6 1/4" in diameter. These souvenir lifebouy's were usually made by crew members on-board the vessel and sold to passengers during the passage.The Africa was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line,(Oceanic Steam Navigation Co, Ismay, Liverpool).....her maiden voyage was on 8th February 1899. On 12 th February 1917 she was torpedoed by U BOAT 66 , then shelled and sunk off Eddystone Rock in the English Channel with the loss of 22 persons. The ship had left Liverpool on the way to Australia via Devonport, Plymouth. With a lifespan of just 17 years items from the SS AFRICA are not plentiful.
