A RARE New Zealand Book Printed in Wellington by Government Printers in 1889 Native,botanical & common names of NZ trees & shrubs. The Text contains historical information, plant description, botanical description. With Hand Drawn pictures of each plant the book is profusely illustrated although Thomas Kirk did not produce any of the illustrations for The Forest Flora of New Zealand...these were carried out under his supervision. Drawings were done by Draughts-men of the Survey Department, while a Mr D. Blair and Mr A. Hamilton contributed at least twenty-six of the plates. Two staff members of the Survey Department, Hugh McKean and Hugh Boscawen, each contributed thirty-eight signed plates. Other artists were E. J. Graham (twenty-nine plates) and W. de R. Barclay (one plate). A close scrutiny of the twenty unsigned plates suggests they were the work of Boscawen or Hamilton. INDIVIDUAL PLATES are currently offered by on-line Fine Print Sellers in the range of $40-125 per print. Green hard cover with gold embossed lettering & black embossed pattern on front cover & spine. Covers have some small amount of wear on top & bottom of spine & corners and edges....some other small wear spots also on back cover. The book is Large Format at 13 1/4" x 9" of 345 pages. Some age browning on Title Page and to last few back pages....also on some few PLATES but most are very clean. Book is tight on front spine and a little loose at bottom of back spine binding. In all a very clean and tidy book.
