This tray is magnificently decorated with Art Deco motifs around the perimeter and the center has three figures beautifully detailed wearing stripes, checks, sabots and caps. The maiden in the center is being courted in colloquial French while holding a basket with an umbrella laid across the top. The man on the left has more material goods to offer (a house and livestock) while the man on the right offers his cap and his heart. The colors are clear and bold and while the background has stylized fields, clouds and sun the three figures are crisp and lifelike. It has been suggested that this tray or platter would have been part of a tea service but it is hard to imagine covering any part of it with other pieces. It is substantial measuring about eighteen by fourteen inches across the deeply lobed top and one and one-half inches high. There is very light crazing on the surface and there are a few chips to the underside rim, not significant.
