Antique Art Nouveau necklace by George Nathaniel Steere, signed GNS & Co. If you've been waiting for the ultimate Steere piece, here it is. The central medallion features an open-mouthed face: devil or monster, the representation of evil and all that scares us, and yet-- not so very scary. Steere softens the facial expression so it's almost playful. Bright red cabochon eyes, tongue, broad nose, and beard, like a lion's head so it's also an animal. Or in Steere's case, a much beloved creature. The necklace includes an abundance of Steere's characteristic classical and mythical details (the metal is gilt brass) and art glass stones, brown with touches of aqua, gold, red, and green, in cabochon ovals. The horizontal chain portion is 18" and the full drop is 3-1/2". The spring ring clasp looks like a replacement, otherwise, everything is original and fantastic. I'm a Steere enthusiast, so see my other listings and Pinterest collection.
