Antique Art Nouveau brooch, three lions' heads and a topaz glass stone, very large and heavy. Unsigned, this showy gilt brass piece is likely the work of George N. Steere. It would be a slight departure from his usual designs, but the mounting of the big glass stone, the hammered-out rounds, and the surface texturing are all Steere characteristics. The lions, spread out above that brilliant stone, are fierce and nicely detailed, and the fast "brushstroke" textures bring the composition together. The topmost lion plaque appears to have been deliberately shortened for effect.
It measures 3" by 2-3/8" and weighs a mighty 54.0g. The condition is particularly good with a bit of facet wear to the stone.
