Antique chatelaine and cherub brooch, with symbolic figures, animals, and decorations, in sterling silver. Measuring 7-1/2" long by 1-5/16" at widest, this is a very large ornamental piece, including a cherub pin at the top and seven heavily decorated, hanging plaques. It calls to mind the intricate work of the Italian Peruzzi family silversmiths.
From the top, I see two half-human-half-bird figures; round fruit; a fat cherub holding grapes; bird heads; a fish; and a saintly figure with halo and butterfly, holding a bird, a staff, and a snake, with a dog at his side, surrounded by verdant foliage. Interspersed are an urn, scrolls, flowers and leaves, and other rich embellishments. While it may be a religious piece with Christian symbolism, it can be worn and appreciated for its beauty alone.
The cherub pin (marked Sterling with a hallmark I can't identify) can be worn separately. The long pendant portion is attached by a dog clip that is not soldered on, an old replacement functioning as a hook. It works well in the overall scheme, and could be easily changed out.
The entire piece weighs 36.0g and is in very fine condition.
