Antique owl's head brooch in diamond and emerald pastes by Martin Mayer, Germany. This gorgeous trembler (trembleuse) is open-worked to create a recess for the owl's bright green eyes; vivid emerald pastes on tiny springs move gently within the sockets. Sparkling clear diamond pastes, arranged in intricate patterns, form the head, face, ears, and eyes. The smooth silver nose is contoured and pointed. Beaded silver work separates the tiny stones.
The brooch is hallmarked for silversmith Martin Mayer, whose work dates from 1888 until the 1930s, produced in Mainz and Pforzheim. It shows the star and wheel (Wheel of Maguntia) as well as 935, a grade above sterling silver.
This small treasure dates from the early 1900s. It has a curved back and c-clasp. The condition is beautiful with two slightly graying stones and one chipped stone, only noticeable with a loupe. The brooch weighs 5.9g.
