Splendid Art Deco paste bird brooch by Knoll and Pregizer, Germany, in 935 silver. This brooch dates from the 1920s or '30s; the quality of Knoll and Pregizer jewelry is so fine that the stones retain their amazing sparkle today. This beautifully rendered songbird on a branch mimics the look of diamonds and white gold. It has a tiny black onyx eye for contrast.
The brooch measures 1-3/4" from beak to tail and about 1" vertically from the top to the bottom of the branch. It is marked 935, with the crossed K&P in a shield, and it has the additional mark, J.K. with a three-lobed flower in an oval cartouche. The safety clasp works perfectly. It weighs 7.9g.
Look at my friend Robin Deutsch's online post on "Image Event" for everything you need to know about Knoll and Pregizer. As Robin says, "In my collector's eye, they are the Cartier of German costume jewelers."
