Antique stick pin with a snake coiled around an opal, in 14k gold. Tiny in size, but beautifully designed and full of color, this pin is shaped like a wavy, vertically-held diamond, with the cabochon opal as its center. The warm yellow gold shows lovely detailing: the snake's head with bead eyes, the body covered in fine scales, the wrapped tail. The round, 3mm opal is blue-green and fiery, deeper in color than appears in the photos.
Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Edwardian eras-- snake jewelry was extremely popular throughout, and this pin is marked 14k on the back, an indicator of its somewhat later origin.
The head of the pin measures 7/16" by 5/16" and the entire length is 2-1/4". The opal has a small chip on the reverse, not seen from the front.
