Antique Victorian sterling silver chatelaine with dragonfly decorated waist plaque and orb hanging watch. This stunning piece is quite remarkable and definitely one of a kind. Chatelaines were popular in the 1880s and derived from the medieval keepers of keys. They hung from the belt or waist sash and might be very ornate. This chatelaine combines interesting metals and materials to outstanding effect.
The sterling silver waist plaque (unmarked but tested) bears an exquisite dragonfly with overlaid silver, yellow gold, and pink gold. The plaque is slightly concave and egg-shaped, with a fancy, scrolled top and diagonal engravings. It has a long, hinged clip on the reverse as well as a loop for hanging. It also has two sturdy, large loops at bottom. They hold the arms of an open-worked, u-shaped mounting with beading.
Attached by rings and chains to this portion is a glass orb watch, sterling silver. One side is porcelain-faced with tiny flowers and designs, and Roman numerals in gold. The opposite side shows the inner mechanism. The watch is not working at present and I have not opened it. The stem does turn. It's an attractive timepiece to wear just as it is. The chain and ring bail of the watch are gold in color but do not test as gold.
The overall length of the chatelaine, top to bottom, is 5-1/4". The entire piece weighs 54.4g.
The glass orb is 33mm and weighs 43.2g. It shows minor surface wear.
This fantastic piece is suitable for a woman or man.
