Antique Victorian locket, Aesthetic period, in silver with gold details. This striking locket is beautifully engraved on the front with a variety of patterns: a ladies' fan with a butterfly and floral motif appears to overlap engraved flowers and leaves; above and below, a raised cross-hatch pattern adds texture; and two curved bars with engraved rectangular terminals frame the design in gold. The fan and natural elements depicted are indicative of the interest in Japanese culture at this time, referred to as japonaiserie.
The locket is a large size, 2-1/2" including the big bail, by 1-1/2", so the inside compartment is spacious. It is not outfitted, and will want a fabric or paper lining. The bail has a British registration mark, but despite great effort, I can't make out its codes. Clearly this locket is sterling silver and dates from the late Victorian period.
The condition is very good with expected gentle surface wear. You may want to polish it to bring up the shine.
