Vintage enamel and sterling silver animal brooch by Hobe, Art Deco, 1940s. Two expressive, long-limbed monkeys play amongst leafy palm trees in this open-worked silver brooch. The details are charming: the smiling monkey on the left seems to be encouraging the tired monkey on the right; the silver framing extends across the brooch to form wavy branches; and the palm leaves are finely serrated. All of the figural elements are contoured, adding lively dimension. The enamel is in good condition--there are a few little spots of loss-- seen under scrutiny. But the colors are wonderful-- glossy and pearlescent. The brooch measures 2" across by 1-3/4" tall and is marked Hobe and Sterling on the back. It weighs 11.9g.
