Antique Egyptian Revival brooch or sash pin, with sphinx, hexagonal citrine glass stone, and Egyptian motifs. Massive in size at 3-3/4" by 2-1/8", this is George Steere at his finest. The sphinx figure, with human head and a lion's body, looks out to the right, below elaborate applied forms, including stylized lotus flowers, and a beautifully faceted glass stone. The surface is decorated with two fleur-de-lis, raised and textured oblongs, and linear marks; the unusual shape is distinguished by four curled and pointed edges. The condition is excellent, with no chips or scratches to the stone.
While unsigned, this remarkable brooch displays Steere's characteristic design work, and Steere aficionados will recognize his inimitable imprint. While little is known about his life, his output was extensive and much of his work is unsigned. Please see my other listings for more information about George Steere.
