Art Nouveau sash pin brooch by George N. Steere featuring two fish, a jellyfish, and a citrine glass stone. In typical Steere fashion, this brooch is elaborately designed, full of interesting elements that include applied forms; a beautifully-faceted, diamond-shaped stone; raised ovals and rounds; an open center space; an engraved surface; and curled edges. The metal is gilt brass.
Highlighting the brooch are two delightful fish with dorsal fins and tiny green eyes, arching above and below some leafy seaweed; there is also a jellyfish! The condition is very fine with gentle age-commensurate wear, and no scratches. With close scrutiny, I see a tiny chip on the reverse side of the stone, but it’s at the top, under the metal and not noticeable. The brooch measures 2-3/4” by 2-1/4” and is signed GNS in a lozenge on the back.
