This pretty little notebook/aide memoire is decorated on the front with a spray of flowers surrounded by gilded swirls and curlicues, and the back is just as finely decorated with a border of flowers and more gilding.
When the pencil is removed from its retaining loops, the covers can be opened to reveal an interior lined with raspberry-coloured watered silk and containing 4 double-sided glazed sheets on which to write. If lead pencil is used, the sheets can be wiped clean and re-used.
There are old jottings on the first two sides, including names and dates. The oldest reads ‘F M Henderson Upton House June 26th 1864’.
The plain silver pencil is stamped Mordan & Co on the barrel, with an S and the French weevil silver mark at the top.
Notebook measures approximately 3 ¾ inches by 3 inches; pencil is 3 ½ inches long.
The item is in very good antique condition with wear commensurate with age but no noteworthy damage. The pencil is in good order with the 'MOR' of Mordan & Co almost completely faded.
