This is a Victorian mourning pin with a design depicting a bouquet of flowers.
The Victorian period is named for Queen Victoria, who reigned in England between 1837 and 1901. She was born in 1819. History has regarded her as an exceptionally good ruler. She was married to Prince Albert between 1840 and 1861 and entered into a very lengthy period of mourning (literally, decades) during which she wore black clothing and influence dress and art and so many things.
Gutta percha is molded and made from latex, taken from Indonesian rubber trees. This piece has a c-clasp, consistent with it age. It is over and has three layers -- the frame with a second smaller, oval layer, and finally the molded floral design.
It is in very good condition. This is a true antique! It measures 1 7/8" by 1 1/2". One should have such an example in their collection.
