This is an extraordinary vintage quilt which came out of a local estate. It comes with a professional appraisal done in 2008. The owner also had a handwritten card which attributed the quilt to Hannah Stahl Shreiver in about 1845. The family had moved from Pennsylvania to Missouri. However, the appraiser dated it to the 1880's. The quilt is all hand done. The fabric is pink and white. The backing has small clusters of black flowers. The binding was done with the white print from the quilt front. Quilt measures about 76 inches x 76 inches. It is what I would call a "summer quilt". If there is batting in between it is a very thin batting. The pattern is called Bear Paw or Maple Leaf. The appraisal describes the quilting pattern as "...spaced cross hatch grid over entire white ground. Blocks and borders quilted with parallel diagonal lines." This was done by an experienced quilter. You can see that the sawtooth parts of the quilt come to a point as they should. The sawtooth border goes all around the quilt - it is on all four sides. The stitches are fine and even. I do not see any wear on this quilt. There is no fading. There are three very small bits of discoloration. I am including the appraisal papers with the quilt. At the time of appraisal the quilt was valued at $750.00. Quilt was appraised by Teddy Pruett, a Member of Professional Association of Appraisers of Quilted Textiles. This quilt can be used on both sides. If you would like more photos please email.
