18th Century Forged Iron Double Crusie Phoebe Grease Oil Lard Lamp Scotland

This is a fine example of a conventional double crusie, also known as a “Phoebe” lamp. It is blacksmith made (forged iron) and originated in Scotland in the 18th century. The serrated stud supporting the upper reservoir permits adjustment as the fluid (oil or grease) is consumed: the lower bowl collects the drip. For use, it could be hung using the hook or have the point stuck into a beam.

Reference: Early Lighting - The Rushlight Club p.40
Condition: Excellent, no damage or repairs evident
Approximate Dimensions: Height 8” (excluding pick), Length of lower reservoir 6 1/2”.
