Spectacular and rare Bavarian Spielwaren doll castle was made by the Rudolf Szalasi firm in the 1970s or 1980s. Very few of these fairytale rococo style castles are to be found.
According to the paperwork (written in German) that came with the doll castle, it was modelled after Herrenchiemsee, one of German King Ludwig XVI's Bavarian castles built in the late 1800s. The doll castle took 6 months to complete and most was accomplished by hand.
It is made of wood with a yellow-gold painted stucco exterior. White wood framed glazed windows, balconies and trim are ornately decorated with wedding cake style piping.
The lavish decoration carries into the interior where the off-white enameled walls and ceilings are richly decorated with raised pink and green flowers and gold filigree piping. The shiny maple floors have a warm brown finish. The castle is open on the front and has five large rooms plus 3 unfinished rooms on the rooftop. The rooftop rooms are removable.
It is wired for electricity and runs on a 12 volt transformer (not included). The bulbs in the various electrified lighting fixtures are 1.5 volts each. There are 5 chandeliers, 7 wall sconces, 6 candelabras and 3 floor candelabras. The lighting fixtures are glued to the cabinets, tables, and piano and wired into the walls. The floor candelabras are also wired into the walls.
13 Erna Meyer dolls dressed by Szalasi in aristocratic costumes are included. The dance floor on the lower left has two mechanized wooden circles that twirl 4 of these dancers around (needs transformer to work). There are 8 silk Fragonard style portrait pictures attached to the walls, 2 separate balconies, a separate courtyard wooden base, a separate entrance staircase, 5 green foam flower beds, and 9 white plastic cherub musicians.
The furniture included with the castle is a side table in the dance hall, two nightstands and a dresser in the bedroom, a buffet in the salon and a buffet and side table in the dining room. All other furniture and the carriage with horses are sold separately.
