Hard to find antique dollhouse tobacco felt lion animal print rug features a lion sprawled out on a violet rug with brown striped border.
The rug measures 4 3/4" x 7 3/4" and is marked, "©GLC14", on the bottom front. Made in the early 1900s, it is in excellent condition very slight fading on one corner – otherwise fine.
Tobacco flannels or felts were give-aways in packages of tobacco and cigarettes at the turn of the century. Popular designs for these felts were baseball players, flags from various countries, popular colleges and universities and dollhouse rugs. Many of the larger size rugs or flannels featured Native American designs.
Animal prints are harder to find. These rugs could be used in country style dollhouses and rustic cabins made by manufacturers such as Bliss and Schoenhut. The animal prints also work well in studies and libraries.
