15 1/2" Spanish Flamenco Dancer - Composition Ethnic Doll - 1930s - 40s
Dramatic 15 1/2" Spanish Flamenco dancer composition ethnic doll has a lovely hand painted face with dark eyes and a smiling open mouth showing white teeth. Her long black mohair is pulled back from her face and held in place with a large bakelite hair comb. Three distinctive curls surround her face - one in front of each ear and one on her forehead.
Her off white satin dress has a lace overlay on the bodice and arms and a separate black tiered lace overskirt. A large wire hoop is stitched to the inside of her skirt to add volume. Three large pink roses are stitched to her neckline and another one is tucked into her hair. She is wearing a gold colored necklace with a cross.
She is a composition shoulderhead doll and has compo hands and legs and a sawdust stuffed body and arms. Her black painted heeled shoes are mounted to a round wire stand. She is 15 1/2" tall including her hair comb. She is missing castanets or perhaps a fan that was held in her upright hand. Her thumb shows cracks where a string was tied. She is also missing her earrings. Otherwise in very nice condition.
These dolls are known by various names - international dolls, folk dolls, tourist dolls, travel dolls, ethnic dolls and foreign costume dolls to name a few.
