Unusual Steiff teddy produced during WW II and made of substitute silk plush, a substitute for the mohair which the Steiff Company was unable to obtain during this difficult time. Teddy measures 30 cm and is fully jointed with a non functioning squeaker. His plush is dark brown, very soft and silky. His is straw stuffed and has linen paw pads. He has brown glass eyes with black pupils, black nose and mouth embroidery and retains his FF button.
Teddy's joints are a bit stiff which is not unusual for a bear of his age. His plush is in good condition, as this substitute material was more fragile than mohair. There are several areas of thinning -on his chest and around his right eye, back of his right arm and left arm near his paw pad. His lovely brown color is a bit faded as evidenced by the darker plush color at his hip and shoulder seams. His linen paw pads are a bit dirty and his foot pads have 2 small areas of straw peeking through the linen. He is a wonderful bear with a sweet expression. These plush bears and wartime animals are my favorite, very few have survived in perfect condition.
