This is a water keg produced and used in multiple ways during the 19-20th century. During the Civil War this water keg was carried under the belly of field ambulance wagons. Later it was used on merchant and naval ships to supply water/rum to the crew. (view the pics). It is made out of oak staves with 6 galvanized bands. Two of which provide feet to keep upright. It has a brass filler cap on chain and a brass drain cock on the end. The bands are tight and have been moved to tighten weathered staves.
It measures: 18" long and 9" end diameter.
