Stunning large white on white nineteenth century shell cameo with orange accents. Hand set in untested gold frame. Subject is a Baccante maiden, follower of Bacchus or Dionysus, shown with grape vine leaves in her hair. Frame may have had a twisted wire embellishment at some time, as there is a very fine line that runs all the way around the outside that is slightly darker than the rest of the patina. Clasp is old style c clasp. Hinge is tube type. Both hinge and clasp seem to have had early repairs. See additional photos for closeups of repairs. Under magnification, cameo shows some light surface crazing on the back (not visible to the naked eye) and has a non-penetrating crack on the back side near the right shoulder. (see photos) Measures approx 1 5/8" x 2".
