A fine and impressive pair of antique gold cufflinks; each comprises two very tactile little rounded torpedoes connected by a five-link chain at the back.
Each cufflink is crafted in solid 18-carat gold which is a beautiful soft slightly rosy colour you just don't get with modern jewellery. It's also rare to find these in 18 carat fineness; they tend to be nine or 15 carat and we've never seen a pair this old, though the style was certainly popular throughout the Victorian age into the Art Deco era. Also... check out the weight! If you're comparing these with similar cufflinks elsewhere, we're willing to bet they've less than half the weight of gold these do. Definitely something of a rarity!
Each cufflink is nicely hallmarked on the back: two of the torpedos are stamped with crown and "18" marks, the other two with the leopard's head denoting the London Assay Office and the date letter Q - 1811. There is also the maker's mark GB and further crown/18 hallmarks on two of the chain links on each cuff.
In very good condition commensurate with their age. We are including the antique jewellery box shown in the photos - this is not the original box but a lovely little place to keep them safe nonetheless.
Size: Each torpedo measures 2 x 0.8cm. The chain is 2.2cm (just under an inch) long.
