The Arts & Crafts movement (c. 1880-1910) championed hand made pieces with an emphasis on craftsmanship and the aesthetics of design to create beauty rather than intrinsically valuable materials such as diamonds. Natural baroque pearls, silver and uncut stones were considered preferable to precious gemstones and the art of enamelling was prized for its ability to let the maker express their creativity. Peacock colours, such as the deep emerald green central to this piece, were especially popular.
Original Arts & Crafts pieces like this are becoming harder and harder to find. This necklace is a stunning example and still so wearable today. The enamel centrepiece practically glows, morphing from a dark bottle green through a brighter leaf green centre down to a mermaid turquoise.
The top pearl, set deeply into its bezel, is a shining greyish-blue plaque while the bottom pearl, with a much higher profile, is whiter, with a softer-sheen matt nacre.
The piece hangs on a fine silver chain with its original slim tongue and box clasp which fixes securely.
Overall in very good antique condition but... the enamel is damaged at the bottom point and the middle of the top edge. There is also a very fine crack which is only perceptible under magnification but the enamel is stable and appears in no danger of further damage. These flaws have been taken into account in the pricing and do not detract from the overall effect of the necklace when worn, which is magnificent!
The piece is unmarked but tests as sterling silver. It was quite black with age when we found it and doubtless you could shine it up to a brighter silver if you prefer but we don't like to overpolish!
Length: 17 inches plus a further 3.25 inches (8cm) drop for the pendant section.
