This necklace is more than a century old but looks as stunning today as it would have on its first owner, most likely a Victorian lady in mourning. The simplicity of the design really showcases the lustrous shine of the ultra-black Whitby jet.
Jet is a type of coal, made from driftwood which sinks to the floor of the sea and becomes slowly buried in mud, hardening over millions of years. Victorian jet, now extremely collectible, largely comes from the English seaside town of Whitby - not to be confused with "French jet", which is actually black glass.
The cross is faceted on both sides, the other beads are flat on the back.
The beads are strung on black silk with knotting at the ends for security. The necklace secures with a square push box clasp in silver metal with a lovely repousse flower design.
In beautiful antique condition, slight overall surface wear consistent with the age of the piece but we've found no cracks or chips. The knotting at the top of the cross is a little messy but perfectly secure and the clasp works as it should.
Size: The cross measures 5.5 x 4.7cm. The beads which make up the chain are 2cm wide.
Length: 15.5 inches.
