This is an early vintage Dendrite Agate brooch also known as a Moss Agate. This semi-precious stone is commonly known as a moss agate because it appears to have moss inside the stone. This Dendrite agate is translucent whitish-gray in colour accompanied by brown and rust branching inclusions which is actually crystallized iron impurities. A dendrite agate is not actually a true agate; it is actually a variety of chalcedony quartz. These stones were popular in the Victorian era. The style of the clasp on this brooch leads me to believe that it was made around the 1920s, possibly earlier. The brooch is not signed so I cannot determine the metal used. The pin is silver tone and the trim around the stone is gold tone.
The brooch measures just over 1.5 inches by 1 inch and weighs 9.69 grams. The roll over clasp is very secure when worn.
I have priced this brooch based on the agate and have not considered the metal that has been used. If it is gold, start the car!! Add this brooch to your collection of vintage genuine stone brooches.
