This is a wonderful, antique shell coin purse from the 1800's. Sailors would carve shells while out at sea and make these sweet little purses as gifts for sweethearts and some became souvenirs. This mussel shell coin purse has a red dyed eel skin liner with three compartments. The shell has lovely, natural, mother of pearl colouring. The liner has some wear from age on the seams with a few minor tears on edges which are to be expected from an item over 150 years old, but overall the purse is lovely (see my photos). There is an original 5 inch chain attached to the shell and a lovely metal hinge and clasp. The shell measures 3.5 inches by 1.75 inches. This purse is a reflection of the life in those times where you only needed to carry a few coins in a purse (no room for a cell phone and credit cards in this sweet purse). This is a purse for collectors of purses and unusual accessories. Because of the few condition issues with the eel skin liner, I have priced this purse very fairly. The shell and hardware are in excellent condition for an antique purse. Add this adorable shell purse to your collection of interesting antiques .
