This is both a beautiful and detailed Austrian micro petit point vintage purse and a piece of Canadian retail history. The purse which dates to the 1950s features two different hand stitched figural scenes of ladies in beautiful flowing dresses with men in pastoral scenes with trees, sheep, a castle and a multitude of flowers. The purse has the original maker's tag on the inside of a pocket which reads "Wiener Studio Smejkal Opernpassage Made in Vienna”. But more interesting is the tag inside that says “CREEDS Toronto”. According to an article by Judy Stoffman published in the Globe and Mail, September 2, 2015, Creeds was a Toronto furrier and clothing merchant who opened a store in Toronto in 1916. Some of Creeds inventory was sourced from Europe like purses, gloves, jewelry as well as high fashion clothing. Even though this purse was made in Austria, the CREEDS label was sewn inside this purse to sell in his store. According to the article, Creeds was a very glamorous store, very expensive and exclusive. In having this purse, not only do you have a work of art made in Austria, you also have a piece of inventory from a store that is a part of Toronto’s retail shopping history.
The purse measures 7.5 inches by 6 inches with a gold tone chain that measures 14 inches. The purse is in excellent condition. The inside of the purse is very clean and features a pocket for lipstick, a mirror in a pocket (the mirror is very aged), a change purse with a chain and another pocket where the Austrian label is sewn inside. The frame is in excellent condition.
Another wonderful micro petit point purse to treasure with a history to go along with it. In beautiful condition as, undoubtedly, the former owner paid a lot for it when it was purchased at Creeds so it was treasured and looked after.
