Spectacular enameled and fused glass pin by Carmel artist, Ruth Buol. Green enameled background with fused glass millefiori beads and domed glass "cookies". The round glass "cookies" have foiled backgrounds which give them an amazing glow, as if they are electrified. The effect is impossible to capture in a photo. Signed on the back: "Buol" though the signature is partially covered by the heavy glaze. Buol started making enamel jewelry in the early 1950s in Connecticut and later moved to California where she continued creating her expressive designs for department stores and private clients. Sometimes her work is signed "Buol," or simply "B," and in later years she used paper stickers that said "Buol's Jewels" - sometimes on the sticker she hand wrote her title for each piece, such as "Mermaid's Tears" or "Sapphires in Bed." Buol gained nationwide attention when she wrote an in-depth article for "Craft Horizons" magazine in 1953 describing her artistic process. In recent years, Buol's work has become recognized and collectible, having been exhibited at the art museum MONA in Nebraska. Her creations are often compared to the work of enamel artists Andree Bazot and Kay Denning. Pin measures 2 3/4 inches by 1 3/4 inches. Excellent condition.
