This is a wonderful set of 5 matching Wedgwood majolica green glazed plates in the Sunflower pattern. They have a nice moulded scalloped basket weave border around the central sunflower, the glaze is vibrant and reflects a bit of 'luster' in places. Their size lends them to use as dessert/fruit plates or salad plates and they look stunning as an accompaniment to the French majolica asparagus servers. These will also display beautifully on a dresser or a wall.
They are in mint condition with no cracks, chips or wear and only very slight crazing in places.
Although identical, the backstamp marks indicate that four of these plates were made in 1866 and the fifth plate was made later, probably c. 1925.
The marks have presented an interesting 'educational journey' through the maze of impressed marks used by Wedgwood from 1860 when the manufacture of majolica was started by these famous potters. In addition to the Wedgwood 'impressed slug mark seen on all the plates, the four older plates also show the initials DNU, which indicate they were produced in December of 1866 or 1892. However, as these are not also stamped 'England' which was instituted in 1891, it has to be assumed that these were made in 1866. The specific marks on the fifth plate are 'Made in England' which was used from 1908 but the three letter impressed mark for the year of manufacture begins with a '4' which was used between 1924-1930. So this set of five consists of four antique plates and one vintage plate. At the very least, they present an interesting historical example for those collectors who enjoy 'sleuthing' through china and pottery marks.
These are the same pattern as a set of 5 other plates, which are also in the shop and although the green glaze is slightly deeper and thicker, they go very nicely together for display or if having a larger number of plates for serving up to 10 is an advantage. Shipping can be combined. Shipping cost for these is based on default but if the difference is more than $5 less than the set price, any over payment will be refunded to the buyers Paypal account.
