This small but very beautiful sterling overlay crystal flask is just wonderful! The size and 'daintiness' of this piece suggests it was made for a lady. One can just imagine it being held by a beautifully gloved hand and it is elegantly slender to allow it to slip into a small handbag.
The top half of the flask is encased with a swirling, finely etched silver Art Nouveau depiction of a cluster of grapes and a grape leaf on both sides. The silver overlay is generous and secure. The crystal is in perfect condition and remains clear and unstained with no clouding or residue. The bottom half of the flask offers a perfectly fitted sterling detachable cup with an interior of gold vermeil. The silver stopper, which is opened and sealed by turning, is in perfect working order with its original cork in place, which is also in good condition. It holds liquid to this day in spite of being at least 100 years old.
Although I cannot find a makers mark, it resembles examples made by Alwin. The base of the cup is stamped Sterling and 201. Other stamps on the neck are 16.
The overall condition is excellent for an antique piece of silver with slight wear and micro scratches commensurate with age. As expected for a piece of silver of this age, there are several small dents, which consist of two small ones on the outer edges of the stopper and a small indentation on one corner of the cup. These honestly do not detract from the beauty and decorative value of this lovely piece but are always worth mentioning.
This measures 4" long, 2 1/4" wide and 7/8" deep and weighs 3.4 oz.
A stunning addition to any collection or anyone's handbag!
