The fine detail and expertly executed decoration on this small, signed rectangular Russian lacquer box is absolutely exquisitely done and depicts the top quality obviously produced by an important artist before some of these boxes started to be produced for the ‘mass market’. Circa 1980.

Depicted is a winter scene of a couple seated in a magical Troika sleigh, wrapped in furs - with 3 fantastical horses being driven through swirling snow by the coachman. The faces are most expressively done as is the detail of the livery worn by the horses. What is perhaps most impressive is the very fine detail and intricacy of the most beautifully painted gold surrounds on the top of the box and around its footed base and with a quality normally seen on much larger examples of these charming boxes. The central scene is surrounded by a fine oval of tiny gold dots/pearls.

This measures 3 3/8’’ x 1 3/8’’ x 1’’ (8.5cm x 3.5cm x 2.7cm). The interior of the box is done in the usual deep red lacquer and the top is hinged. An original label on the bottom states ‘Hand Made in Russia’. This box looks as if it has never been out of its original wrapping – excellent collectable 'as new' condition.
