This is an exceptionally lovely example of the finest of vintage Russian black lacquer boxes c. 1987 from the village of Kholui / Kholut. Additionally, it has clearly never been used and is in perfect mint condition suitable as a true collector's piece.
It depicts a delightful winter landscape showing fanciful pine trees and a distant cottage covered in thick, swirling snow with a fur clad couple marveling at the jewels which are being abundantly produced by the most handsome prancing stag every time he taps his hoof. A round rayon of gold light emanates from behind his head and a white cat with blue eyes can be found in the foreground. This wonderful scene depicts the fairy tale of 'The 'Silver Hoof' (please see longer description of this well known tale below).
The hand painting on this box is extraordinarily finely detailed and the colors softly vibrant and slightly more muted that the colors seen in the artwork of the neighboring village of Palekh. The minutely done gold ornamental borders around the top of the box and on each side are remarkably fine and are embellished with the tiniest of silver dots and highlights. The box is signed by the artist and the top is perfectly fitted. Marked 'Made in USSR' on the base.
Measures 2 3/4" square with interesting indented corners and is 1 1/2" deep.
This little treasure has come from an estate where many wonderful collectibles were simply stored after purchase and this piece does not seem an exception to this rule. It was found and is presented in it's original box with a certificate. In absolutely perfect condition, it is clearly unused and never displayed. Mint/'as new' condition - a true collector's treasure from Kholui and such a lovely piece for display.
Please do not hesitate to ask for more photos or clarification as photographing these boxes when they are in unused condition is difficult as their lustre and shine reflects absolutely everything!
