Offered is a lovely actual pair of colorful and beautifully hand painted matching early 20th Century Quimper plates produced by HB Quimper c 1889 to 1904.
The timeless charm of Quimper pottery reflects the culture of the Brittany region of France and is always valued for its decorative appeal but these two plates are particularly attractive due to their lightly scalloped borders and the wonderful florals which surround the centerpiece of the highly detailed and very well and carefully painted figures of a Breton country gentleman and lady. The colors are softly vibrant in hues of blue, yellows, ochre and green and make these plates a fresh and stunning decorative touch for a dresser or to add to a collection.
HB Quimper was one of the earliest Quimper firms which was founded in 1685 by Jean Baptiste Bousquet. These plates are both marked on the front and the back with two different forms of the HB Quimper mark, the combination of which would date them to very early 20th Century. Additionally, the kiln marks on the back of the plates and the uneven coverage and running of the glaze on the back are consistent with older manufacturing techniques.
For antique plates of this age, the condition is excellent other than a repaired chip on the plate (top left 1 o'clock) showing the gentleman, which has been very well repaired and is actually quite hard to notice from the front of the plate. A photo of this is shown. There is also a small glazing fault on the 'lady plate' where the glaze did not 'take' well (9 o'clock) and although not noticeable, it is worth mentioning. Pricing on this set takes into account the small repair to one plate.
The plates measure 9 3/4".
Plates of this age are becoming extremely rare so they are a very nice find!
