This is a wonderful vintage hand sewn generous single bed cover with two delightful little girls which are appliqued and embroidered in the center of an embroidered and appliqued oval panel of green leaves and pink daisy type flowers. Fine off white cotton with neatly done green trim around all the edges and the center panel.
The little girls are particularly sweet with ruffles of fine lace around their 'bloomers' and hems. Their bonnets are embroidered in such a way as to resemble the texture of straw, The bouquet of flowers being carried by the little girl in blue gingham is beautifully detailed and finely done and also surrounded by a fine trim of lace. The sashes around their bonnets are lavishly embroidered to give depth and substance.
The center panel perfectly covers the top of a single bed (38" wide x 76" long); the two side panels and the end panel overhang by 13" to fully hide the mattress. The top panel (38" x 14.5") would generously tuck under complementary bed pillows or cushions to neatly cover the top of the bed ~ please see photo of this spread on a four poster single. This spread is unlined. Not strictly necessary but it could benefit from that protection and substance.
I have always been told that this was made for my mother by her grandmother for her first 'proper' bed, so family provenance puts it to 1920.
This has been carefully stored and gently washed and the overall condition is very good for a piece which is nearly 100 years old. A few stitches needed here and there to reattach the pocket on one the little girl's dresses, fully close a few seams and reattach a few little corners of the appliqued leaves. There is some wear to the lace on the dress apron edge of the little girl's dress who is on the right, which could be replaced. One very small frayed 'hole' which could be nicely mended (so small that I cannot even pick it up on a photo); two very small and pale 'rust' spots (where do they come from!?) and one darker spot (please see photos). None of these little faults are particularly noticeable but are worth mentioning for the sake of accuracy.
This is a really lovely example of the exceptional seamstress skills and dedication of the ladies of this period and would be a charming addition to any special little girl's bedroom. There is another handmade but unfinished check and four leaf clover quilt top also in the shop ~ the colors of which would complement this beautifully as an extra 'throw'. Please do not hesitate to be in contact for more details or photos.
