Delightful and rare small jug made by the renowned French Longwy factory in their highly collectible, specialized and complex technique known as 'Emaux Cloisonne'. Highly colorful florals and leaves in lovely shades of sea blue, cerise, lime green, coral and pale pink with a deep cobalt blue handle and upper rim make this a joyful little piece for serving or decor.
Marked with the Longwy Emaux 'armorial' shield, in the centre of which is a holly bush. Longwy is situated on the far east border of France and the holly bush was used in their mark from about 1890 as a socio-political warning to their perhaps more aggressive neighbors. The holly represents the statement 'Si frotté, on se pique’, which translates to 'if rubbed, we will prick'! The mark on this particular piece would put it c. 1930. This piece is also marked with a pattern number 5674 which was used to link the piece to the item catalogue number from which it would have been ordered.
This small treasure is 5" high, 6 1/4" across from the handle to the spout and 4" at the base. Condition is very good other than a small shallow chip on underside of the spout, which although quite difficult to see is reflected in the price of this wonderful piece (please see last photo). There is some crazing in the interior of the jug but this is standard for these pieces as it was part of their manufacturing process.
