This is an extremely impressive and attractive piece of classic French Faience c. 1920 'Terre de Fer' which could be used as a large Jardiniere/Cache Pot or as a magnificent center piece on a party table as a wine or champagne cooler. Absolute stunning on a table for buffets and outdoor summer parties!
It is adorned with the most beautifully and intricately done hand-painted florals, on a pale cream ground, including large bouquets of assorted flowers centered on both long sides and at each end under the handles. Smaller bouquets and groups of individual flowers are artfully scattered around the body of the piece and under the rim. Flowers include the distinctive tulip, so reminiscent of the maker Longchamp, roses, forget-me-nots, freesia, batchelor buttons and lilies, to name just a few. It is well gilded around the edges and rim with gold feathering detail under the top rim and on the attractive spiral turned handles. The rim and body of the piece are lightly fluted which adds interest to this quite enormous piece. This was originally made as a foot bath or in French a 'Rafraicheur de Pieds' but will now lend itself wonderfully to perhaps more modern uses as well as being a stunning decorative piece.
It measures 17.5" long with the handles; 13.5" long across the rim of the bowl x 10.25" wide; 11" deep across the bowl and stands nearly 8" high. To give an idea of size the geraniums in one of the photos were in 8" pots. Weight is 4311g.
There is only very minor age related wear to the gilding on the handles and a small shallow chip and an old repair to a small chip to the underside rim of the bowl, neither of which show when it is placed - but always necessary to mention.
Other than that the condition is absolutely perfect with no crazing, firing faults or other issues. The only marking is an impressed 'K' on the base but there is no doubt that this can be attributed to Longchamp as the floral decoration, although a rather rare design from this factory, is so distinctively and unquestionably of that well known French maker. It is possible that this piece was either commissioned or originally came with an under plate which may have carried the actual Longchamp impressed mark.
