All of Miriam Haskell's jewelry is wonderful but this piece really is a remarkably stunning, large 2 1/4" diameter, utterly sparkling rhinestone and gilt brooch from this renowned and highly collectible jewelry designer. Most likely produced in the 1950's but due to its quality and elegant simplicity, this piece still remains utterly classic and wearable today.
This brooch is tremendously dimensional which adds a great deal to its beauty. To accomplish this, the center of this brooch has a depth of 1/2" and consists of a 'mound' of delicate gilt branches of leaves and flowers within and on top of which rhinestones are set both on the base and in graduating levels and at slightly different angles. There are even tiny 1mm stones tucked well into the base to add such wonderful depth and 'life' to its sparkle. What fine detail! The center is surrounded by small daisy like flowers on the outer edge of the brooch - all in lovely gold gilt in a wonderful rich tone.
The centrally placed largest stone is 1/4" across and is complemented by stones in a combination of at least three other smaller sizes, which must amount to at least 36 stones in total. They are set both deeply tucked into the base of the 'mound' and more prominently. Although the placement of the stones appears random, they exhibit a beautiful balance which is very pleasing to the eye. The stones are mounted in discreet shallow cups which have been soldered to a flower or a branch or to the base and are secured by claw closures. The 'branch' supports are expertly wired to the Russian filigree base so that this is almost impossible to see with the naked eye - a trademark of this top quality and enduring designer.
The back of the brooch is equally lovely consisting of the Haskell signature oval cartouche with 'Miriam Haskell' in upper case letters in a beautifully detailed Russian filigree which includes tiny 'fleurs de lys' and flowers.
This brooch is in pristine 'as new' condition. Having come from an estate where many wonderful things were just left in boxes after purchase and never worn or used, and this is one of them. There is no damage, wear or verdigris whatsoever on this exquisite piece. The pin is straight and the c-clasp in perfect working order. Despite it's age, it is in perfect condition.
Measures 2 1/4" diameter. The stones have been set slightly to the bottom of center which will allow the balance of this brooch to 'sit' beautifully.
A truly stunning piece!
