This wonderful set of 8 late 19th Century French Majolica 'Barbotine' plates are really colorful and would look so decorative on a dresser in your 'French Country Kitchen'! They would also be equally lovely as a set of cheese and fruit or dessert plates. Although all the plates are of the same basic design with a slightly indented rim and a deeply scalloped raised impressed border, 4 of them depict two pears with a yellowish tint to the border and and the other 4 depict an apple and a pear with a border in a greenish tint. However, the deep pink and green coloration of the fruit is the same on both types of plate and they go very well together.
Other than what may be the painter's signature, they are unmarked but are most likely by Sarreguermines.
Condition is excellent for plates of this age with only a very few nibbles which can only be felt, some slight crazing, a little discoloration on some of the plates and one plate has some deep pink glaze 'drips' on the darker pink portion of the pear and the apple, which is not particularly noticeable and expected in pottery of this type and age. No chips or cracks.
The plates measure 9" across.
These are a very nice example of French Barbotine from the late 19th Century and it is special to find such a large set in such good condition.
There are also two further plates, one each of each pattern which have some damage (one with a tight stress crack and one with a chip on the outer edge). If a buyer would like to have 10 plates for use as display or service, I would be happy to include these at no extra cost other than a small additional contribution to the shipping.
