The mark on this plate indicates that it was made between 1900-1923, which has been verified by an expert at Royal Copenhagen. Flora Danica plates from this early 20th century period are rarely seen on the market.
Chosen from the vast Danish Botanical work Flora Danica, the plant represented on this plate is Papaver Rhoeas. L (field or flanders poppy) and is particularly lovely in its artistic appeal and depth of the color of the poppy.
This plate appears to have been expertly repaired which can only be felt - not seen - on the back of the plate. I cannot see or feel any evidence of repair on the front of the plate whatsoever. It is completely 'sound' and shows no cracks or irregularities. Otherwise in perfect condition. This is a 'Factory 1st' shown by no slashes through the waves. Series #20/3554.
The exquisitely detailed, beautifully hand painted representation of the wild plants growing in Denmark on these older plates, appear to 'float' more naturally within the beautiful gold saw-tooth edged and pierced border, than examples which are of a more 'contemporary age'.
Ever since its creation, when it was commissioned by the King of Denmark as a gift for the Tsarina Catherine II, Royal Copenhagen has been considered one of the world's most prestigious and luxurious services in existence. This plate is a fine example of this golden age of porcelain and is a true collector's piece.
