This is a lovely diverse group of twelve vintage (1950's-60's) International Travel dolls ranging in size from 4.5" to 11". They are all in nicely made costumes in mostly very good condition. A lovely little Nancy Ann Storybook doll, an old Chinese Mao period doll and a Spanish Matador are particularly special. Five of them have sleep eyes. Please see close up photos for more detail and I would be happy to supply more photos of individual dolls if requested.
Running from left to right in the main photo, they include:
Two 9" Portuguese ladies in whimsical costumes, plastic face and bodies, sleep eyes, jointed/strung legs and arms (some are loose but attached). The doll on the right has a loose head. In addition to their special black felt hat from which falls a sort of 'cape', these ladies wear 5-6 lace edged petticoats under their pleated/kilt type tartan skirts, gold medallions and pretty, bright aprons.
Two American Indian ladies (7.5 and 11") dressed in authentic buckskin outfits and perfect moccasins, black mohair braids and sleep eyes. The smaller of the two has a baby in a 'papoose' on her back. Plastic. One of the larger doll's legs feels loose but is attached.
An Italian lady made and tagged by Eros, Florence wearing a nicely detailed costume from the Capri region. She is 7.5" tall and in very good condition. Pretty felt molded painted face with eyes to the side.
Chinese 'Mao Period' 8.5" Farmer's Wife dressed in an immaculate tunic, trousers and apron typical of that period. A jaunty black cotton and straw hat (removable) sits on her bisque/composite (?) head with a well painted face, painted black hair with a mohair braided bun at the back. Her body is cloth and hands and feet the same as the head. Several nicks and chips to the face, hands and feet do not detract from this special, authentic doll.
A 6" Mexican 'Senorita' with a plastic well painted face and the most wonderful 'fly-away' braids which are attached to the underside of the large sombrero which is fixed to her head. Her costume is a little faded and worn and has obviously been well loved but she is sweet.
Pair of 7" Italian pennant bearers from Sienna made and tagged by Eros, Florence. Beautifully painted molded felt faces with sideways eyes, felt hat, pennants and well done costumes in good condition.
Handsome 9" Spanish Matador. Wonderfully expressive painted cloth face and hands. Beautifully detailed light green silk suit and trousers embroidered with fine gold thread. Black silk shoes with a heel on one foot to support his stance. Black felt hat with pompoms to each side. Lots of movement to this doll.
A 4.5" African 'baby' dressed in a tribal outfit decorated with lots of beads. Plastic body and sprung legs and arms. One leg is a little loose but still well attached.
Sweet little 5 1/2" Nancy Ann Storybook plastic doll marked Storybook Dolls, USA on her back with blue sleep eyes in perfect working order, strawberry blond, neatly styled hair held by a pretty ribbon bow and silk flower. Her dress is a lovely deep purple/blue dress with a very full skirt covered by a patterned apron both of which are generously trimmed with lace. In immaculate condition other than slight wear to the hem of the back of the skirt and some wear to the ribbon which ties her apron.
These dolls would be great additions to a collection or as a wonderfully diverse 'starter set' for the young collector.
