This really handsome and wonderfully decorative French majolica/barbotine asparagus server or 'cradle' is beautifully colored in deep vibrant greens reminiscent of the deep green glaze of Majolica lettuce or leaf plates, which it would complement beautifully. A cradle of blue tipped asparagus sit on a bed of cabbage leaves with two handles. This would look striking as a display piece when not being used as a stunning serving piece as its large cradle will hold a substantial quantity of these popular vegetables.
An identical piece can be seen on page 119 of the very well known reference book on French barbotine 'Artichauts et Asperges en Barbotine' by Maryse Bottero. She attributes this piece to the famous french maker Creil et Monterreau. This piece is marked with a simple embossed 'C' on the base.
It is an impressive size measuring 15" long x 10" wide and 4" high. This piece of fine French barbotine is in excellent condition for its age, with the exception of a chip on the back underside of the dish, which cannot be seen from the top and a small nick on the end of one of the asparagus making up the cradle (please see the last two photos). Neither of these small defects detract from the appeal of this highly collectible piece.
