This is a German pottery / stoneware Mettlach Etched ( marked 3/10 Liter ) Club Stein and is signed Heir. Schlitt on the side of the stein. It has impressed mark on the underside: Castle Mark / Mettlach / Ges. Gesch. / 2090 / 23 IV 01 / in gold number 19. Heinrich Schlitt: Born in Biebrich - Mosbach in 1849 / He was the most prolific stoneware designer at Mettlach. The stein has etched decoration with an image of a man & woman on opposite sides of verse, depicting a gentleman smoking a pipe at a bar with Cards & Dice and a Bar Maid sweeping the floor with a broom. There is a dog ( looks like a Dachshund ) looking up at a Black Cat standing up above the verse.The inlaid lid has a figural "Stein" with arms & legs walking / marching with a Key in one hand and a walking stick in the other one. Up in the sky above him is a quarter Moon with a face. This Stein would date from 1880 - 1920. It is 6 & 1/4" tall ( to the top of the lid ) and has the figural head of a Gnome on the Thumb Press. The Verse on the Stein is as follows: Jeschonerdie Kneip / Deslo schlimmer / furs Weib, / Je schlimmer / das Weib, / Umsoschoner die Kneip. It is in excellent condition with no mars or damage and is a real interesting one.
