This is an 1890's -1900's Chinese Hand Painted Mother of Pearl Belt. It has 29 pieces that are handed painted and alternate with 2 different shapes. It measures 29 1/4" in length and the individual pieces measure about 1 1/4" in length by about 1" across. Each of the Oval shaped pieces has a scene of everyday living in a Village, hunting, bathing, riding horses, etc. The fancier shaped pieces have beautiful motif of designs with Birds, Butterflies and Floral flowers. The pieces do have some small chips on the edges and painted areas / spots that are missing. It is connected together with brass chain attached to the edges on either side. It has brass locking fittings on either side that lock into the other piece, so it will stay locked together to wear it as an exotic Eastern Belt. It has a Gold background with what appears to be a laquer on it to help keep the handing painting on the pieces of Mother of Pearl. It looks similar to Satsuma hand painted Pottery.
