This is a Museum Quality 14 5/8" Tall Figural Austrian Silver Compote. It measures 11" across the top shallow dish / plate, has a border that is 1 1/2" wide and has a fancy rococo border with scrolling & floral open piercing lattice work around it. The top dips into a shallow plate with a hand chasing fancy design in the middle that measures a 1/2" wide border. It has a raised round dome centerpiece in the very center that is 2 1/2" across. Next there is a fancy designed piece that attaches to the shallow dish that is about 6" around. This tapers down to a candlestick shape with 2 parts that measure 1 3/8". It has a figural distinguished Gentleman holding a cane in his right hand and his left arm & hand is raised above his head. He has a full beard & mustache and his hair hangs right below his ears. This piece has wonderful detail and shows every small little detail. His costume is detailed with a vest with a rosette design throughout, has large buttons and has side pockets. he is wearing a shirt with cuffs and the collar of the shirt is over the vest with a scarf knotted at the center and then it continues to flow across the vest and it is doubled around and is almost down to his knees. The Cane he is holding measures 3 1/2" He stands 6 1/4" tall with his arm raised above his head. He is wearing knicker pants that come to right below his knees and he is wearing knee high stockings. He has slip on Boots that are tied with shoe strings at the top of the boot. He is standing on a platform that measures 4 1/8". He is standing on a spool thread shaped stand that measures 1 1/8" tall and is attached to a fancy elaborate piece on the stand that bows out and has a corset shape down to 11 3/4" and 3" in length.It has a ribbon cord design around the bottom part and has (4) large medallions. The next part has (24) fancy rococo designs that are like the larger medallions, but smaller in size. It continue on to two more plain levels and has (4) elaborately decorated feet that have similar designs as the other medallions parts.It measures 1 7/8" in length, 2 3/4" across that rises it 1 1/2" taller from the base part. In Tardy's International Hallmarks on silver book, it is shown on page (75) with the Minerva Head for Austrian Silver, which is found on the top dish/plate. It has a date letter of 1891 -1901 / " AV " in a cartouche for Imported Articles. It has Maker's Marks in a cartouche of " SS ". The production period of this Hallmark dates from May 26th 1886 - to April 22nd 1922. It is in great condition, the only problem it has is the dish / plate where it is attached to the other piece below has been repaired at some point in time and now the plate does not sit straight on the base of the Compote. However, it does not show any repair or anything with the domed cap on the inside of the plate. We are not going to put any strain on this attached piece to try to straighten it out. We will leave it to someone who will be most careful to do this without damaging it. It weighs around 2 lbs 5.1 ozs / 1052 grams.
