1890's Victorian Silverplated Cake Basket w/ Cherubs in Garden
This is an 1890's Victorian Silverplated Elaborate Designed Cake Basket with Cherubs in the Garden. The very top of the Cake Basket has (2) Large round Medallions on either side of the Basket Top. There are Scenes in the Medallions on both sides of the Basket Top with Winged Cherubs working in the Garden. There is (1) Winged Cherub with a Watering Can in his hand and he is busy watering the Garden. And another (1) one, a Winged Cherub that is carefully placing a nest of little baby Birds high up on a branch of a Flowering Apple Blossom Tree. This same Scene in the Medallions is on both sides of the Basket Dish as well as on the reverse. The Scenes are almost identical except in (2) Medallions, front and back, you can not see all of the watering can. The Basket Dish has an elaborate Etched Big Floral Design and has a detailed and wonderfully Etched Big Butterfly. The top has a Fancy Floral Border that is 1/2" wide. It has another Border that is Geometric in Design and is 3/8" Wide and is 3/8" apart from the other border design. This Basket Dish measures 9 3/8" across the top. It measures 10 1/4" across from one end of the Medallion to the other end of the other Medallion. The Basket Handle measures 17 3/8" in length and the handle has (5) long stemmed Floral Blooms at the very Top and (2) Floral Rosettes with Leaves on either side. The Middle part of the Stand Base is 3" in length and the next part cones out and is 1 1/2" in length and the next part cones out 1 1/4" in length. The Base is Bell Shaped and the very bottom Border has a Fancy Overall Floral Design and is 3/4" in length. The bottom of the Base measures 5 1/4" across and is not perfectly round. It is marked "Meriden B. Company 1844 ".(a pattern number) ( a Shield with the scales inside ) This is the Meriden Britannia Company from Meriden, Connecticut. There is one spot that looks like the plating is worn through the plating on the bottom of the Basket Dish and a little wear on the top of the Cone Shaped Base in a few small places. Overall, it is in Remarkable Condition and is quite a Fabulous Victorian Holloware Center Piece Cake Basket.
